Re: help on voltage reg and stator

get a volt meter and set it to ac, check the leads coming out of the stater it should be 16 to 20 volts ac at 1000rpms multiply and check it at 3,000rpms, (harley service manual). now shut off the motor. now switch to ohms .1 to .3 is good between the leads, now check from 1 lead to ground. ofl is good, continuty is bad. now for the regulator. take a test light and check the lead (going to the stator) does it lite up (that's bad). If your stator checks good then the regulator is probably bad, you should get around 13.5 volts to the battery while the bike is running, if your stator checks good and your voltage regulator isn't regulating voltage, ie, it should remain fairly constant when revving the engine, it will rise a little though.

Re: help on voltage reg and stator

While the bike is running, unplug the regulator and scrape the post on the cylinder fins, if it sparks the regulator is junk. Put your meter on "AC" voltage and test the two pins on the stator, it should read over 20 or so, check the actual reading to your manual. With the engine off, ohm each lead to ground of the stator, if it doesn't read out zero, it's junk. A battery load tester will determine weather it is good or not.
Good luck!
