View Full Version : Install of V&H quiet baffles
Thinking of putting a set on order for when Jim gets them in stock again. Town appears to have decided that it has nothing better to do with my tax money than go after loud bikes... Haven't installed the ones I just ordered yet, am wondering if I should wait until I can get the baffles to do the install or if I can install the baffles while the pipes are on the bike.
Anyone know?
So, on the set of V&H BigShot staggereds that I got, it definitely appears as though the baffles are removeable on the bike. There is a set screw on the back side, looks like I can install and remove baffles while the pipe is on the bike?
Are the old ones hard to get out? Anyone around here actually install a set, I know Jim did for the review he wrote? Pull set screw, remove old, install new, insert screw?
Thanks,
Never used V&H. However, I have had lots of experince changing baffles on various bikes. I know you anxious, but I would wait for the quiet baffles and swap them off of the bike.

I just installed my set of V&H Quiet Baffles 2 nights ago, and all I can say is "Prrrrrfect!". When I bought my bike used, the original owner has long since removed the baffles from the V&H longshots. Removing the baffles didn't just make them LOUD, it also robbed the low end torque and power as well as created very annoying backfiring and popping when I would let off on the gas.
Installation was less than five minutes with a single set screw each and a little lock-tite for good measure. After installing, the bike has solid power through the RPM range, idle volume is significanly qieter, and I still have plenty of "growl" when I give it the gas.
I don't think you can go wrong with these!
I have a set of V&H Longshots on my wifes 2002 Honda Sabre. I would like to quiet them down! Will this "quiet baffle" work on these pipes, and will the result be substantial?
If so where can I get them?

I just installed a pair of V&H Quiet Baffles in my Bigshot Longs today. What a job! :nut:
I took off the seat and the bags to provide good access to the pipes.
The Bigshot Long end caps came off without any problem. You have to use the right size Allen wench to unscrew the end cap screws. But that was the easy part!
I had to pull off the upper pipe heat shield to get access to the existing upper pipe baffle fastener screw. It was tough, but I finally got the upper pipe heat shield off. Taking the heat shield off first is probably not the best way to do this.
But I could not get the lower pipe heat shield off. It hung up on the front cylinder fins, and the right footboard bracket. I removed the right footboard. Then, using a Torx 45 socket, I loosened the 3 fasteners in the bracket for the right footboard, the rear brake master cylinder and the engine guard. After this, I could rotate the right footboard bracket downward slightly out of the way. But I still could not get the lower heat shield off.
So I finally had to remove both pipes together. They are attached to each other with the Power Chamber cross-over about midway. I also had to remove the 2 bolts connecting the pipes rear support bracket to the bike frame.
Once the pipes and bracket were off the bike, I removed the remaining heat shield. Then I drilled a 1/2" diameter hole in the back of each heat shield to provide future access holes to the baffle fastener screws. It was difficult to get the exact location of the screw access holes. I got one access hole right on, but the other slightly overlaps the baffle fastener head.
To remove the baffle fastener screws, I used the same Allen wrench. The original baffles came out easily since they had only been in for about 9 months. They were only about 2-1/2" in from the open end of the pipes. I just grabbed the nut welded inside each baffle with a pair of pliers and pulled them out.
The new Quiet Baffles went in easily if you screwed them in and pushed the fiberglass packing/tape tight to the outside of the baffle as it went in the pipe. Lining up the baffle fastener screw holes with the holes in the pipes was interesting. I finally got them lined up using a 1" diameter wood dowel with a 1-3/4" long screw drilled through the wood dowel. I reused the Allen wrench to fasten the baffle fastener screws in the new baffles. I also used blue Loc-Tite on them to make sure they stay in.
Now for the hard part! I re-installed the heat shields on the pipes, since the pipes were off the bike now. Then I tried to re-install the pipes (with the heat shields) back on the bike. That took some effort since the pipes rear support bracket did not line up properly with the 2 threaded holes in the bike frame. I had to further loosen up the 4 bolts connecting the pipes to the rear support bracket, to get the rear support bracket holes to line up properly with the threaded holes in the bike frame. It took awhile, but I finally got everything tightened, including the exhaust flange bolts.
I still have to go back tomorrow and re-fasten the right footboard bracket and re-install the right footboard.
All in all, a long day! I'm pooped!
I needed a beer after all that! :beerchug:
Hopefully, I can check out the pipes with the new Quiet Baffles tomorrow! :thumb:

Might want to try this link. I just installed a set of Python 3 Staggered duels last night. The sound is great but loud. I'm thinking of buying a set of the quiet baffles just in caes the neighbors raise hell. I fired the bike up a 6:00am this morning for my putt to work. Those suckers get attention.

I too installed the V&H quiet baffles in my big shot staggered.
I also had to (screw them in) but really wasn't to much trouble.
At first I thought thet were to quiet, but now unless I'm nuts, they seem
to have gotten a little louder. They always sounded much deeper than
the stock baffles. I like them a lot..........
Judy,
Cool picture in your gallery of your Mom & Dad in 1936. Where is that? White Oak, PA.?
Do you have any other photos of your Dad on his '36 Harley?

Thanks.
White Oak is about 16 miles south east of Pittsburgh. Near McKeesport, PA
I do have other pictures of them with his scoot. I need to scan them one of these days. They followed the Pittsburgh Pirates around the country on his bike back then. I have some cool old hill-climb pictures they took. On the picture in the gallery, right side, about 3 doors down from Standard Auto is the Harley Shop. They met there before runs.

I currently have a set of V&H Big Shot Shorts on my fuel injected deuce. They came on the bike when I bought it. They are apparently one of the older sets, as they do not have the "power chamber" crossover. They do have baffles in them (I assume the original ones). The volume level of these pipes is ok, volume wise. However, I want the low, bassy, "thump your chest" type of sound.
I am probably going to buy a set of Big Shot Staggereds. I understand that the newer ones with the "power chamber" have more of the low, "bassy" sound than do the ones without the power chamber. Is this correct? Also, which baffle do I want to use in order to get that chest thumping type low sound? Bear in mind, I don't necessarily want them to be any "louder" (Nor much "quieter", either) than what I already have, but I do want to get rid of the mid range sounds, and get more of the low, bassy, chest thump.
Thanks,
DB

I have had the V&H "Quiet Baffles" in my Bigshot Longs (with "Power Chamber") for a short time now. The "Quiet Baffles" force the exhaust gases to flow around the interior end of the baffle tube before entering the perforated baffle tube. They make the pipes sound lower and deeper, which I really like.
The overall sound level is still fairly high, only slightly less than what the original pipes sounded like. The original straight-through baffles (with no interior end plate) really did not divert the exhaust gas flow at all before entering the perforated baffle tube.
The bike pulls great in the low and mid-range level now. But I may have lost a little on the top end. No matter, I just like cruising on my Heritage.
I am glad that I put the "Quiet Baffles" on. I passed a local motocycle officer going the other way yesterday, and he just gave me a hand wave. So I hope that these "Quiet Baffled" pipes will not attract too much attention from the local police. :grinbounc
I have an Evo WG and installed the QB's. I spent weeks tuning and tuning the CV carb (has a TJ kit). The back pressure was appreciated, and it finally runs perfect at all RMP ranges, better mileage, too. Low and intermediate ranges rage with torque. Riding two up (with the weight and all) the ranges are still smooth.
I will tell you one thing, these say "QUIET" for a reason-they are! Suits me. The tone is low-down fat and when it wakes it roars.
Hey all. I am new here and was interested in the Quiet Baffles. What is the diameter of the baffles? I have Cobra Lo-loys that are 2 1/8" ID and was wondering if they would fit.
Thanks

My under standing is that the 16 ga SE's are the same as VH bigshot staggereds, only they come with the quiet baffle. If that's true will the stock VH baffle work in my SE's? :beerchug:
I have V&H staggered with quiet baffles.
They're not quiet.
Sound very nice though -
If you're expecting say SE-II loudness... they're much louder.
