View Full Version : Choosing Pipes - I'm going round in circles!

Ok - history first:

I have an '01 EFi Deuce with SE slash cuts fitted. I picked up some Samson Big Gun II short slashers fairly cheap but haven't fitted them yet. I'm about to go 95" with "mild" SE203 cams.

I was just going to fit the Samsons & use my DFO to sort fuelling stuff, however a friend offered me good money for the Samsons so I started looking at alternative pipes.

First thought was to go with V&H Big Shot staggered - I know the sound, quite like it, reputation is good (better than Samson)

The only thing against them really is that there's a lot of them around these days.

Then i looked at the Big Radius & Side Shots - haven't actually seen any on a bike so holding them in reserve.

Next up were Bub Rineharts - mixed rep to be honest. Heard a few problems about low/mid power loss which will not be a great match to the 203's which are supposed to be giving me more power here.

In my crazier moments I've also looked at some Samson Zoomies - pretty crazy looking pipes & definitely not "everyday" items. I've seen a supplier selling them with torque cones to help get over problems of stright thru pipes.

I have to own up that I really like the look of the Yaffe X-Pipes and also quite like the Crack pipes as well. I believe they are both made by Supertrapp who have a pretty good rep.

However I've read more than once that the Crack pipes blue really quickly. In fact there were some advertised recently & the owner said they had blued after only 600 miles! He'd re-chromed them but it didn't seem like a good sales pitch to me! I've only ever seen them on "show" bikes so maybe that's all they are good for?

So where am I now - back with keeping the Samsons or moving to the V&H

Any advice greatly appreciated.......

PS - I'm not a big fan of the look of 2:1 pipes, would need to be a very convincing case to try some.

First of all... Welcome to Cycle Chat! Your gonna love it here...

As for pipes, you will likely get a whole bunch of opinions because everyones tastes are a little different.

I just bought and mounted a set of Pythons and they look spectacular!!!

They are basically the V&H big Shots staggerd with out the billet tips... they are actually made by V&H and have the same cross-over chamber. They are loud N' proud... and they are less money than the V&H...

I picked up a set from DJ at CycleSPot.com, and got a great price... best I found around! DJ, and others run these pipes on their rides as well, so they come highly reccomended...

One of the reasons I picked them is because I wanted to be a little different... every on seems to have the V&H pipes...

I am extremely happy with them... My bikes off getting Dyno tuned and I hope to be pounding the ground with my new pipes by the weekend!

Good Luck with your decision!

Molan, fbomer's right. You can't go wrong with the V&H Big Shot Staggered or the Python's. If you want to save a few bucks, go with the Python's. Either way you have the crossover chamber and both are made by V&H.

As for sideshots, take a look in the members gallery "Suty" has them on his scoot.

Best performing is going to be a 2 into 1 like the Fatcat. But I understand if you don't care for the look. I finally put one on my bike, and it's going to stay (even though I'm not a big fan of 2 into 1 look). If you want to be different there is always Hooker, their pipes are stepped header, with ceramic coating, and you can purchase different tunable baffles for your application.

Hey Jim,

I've always had you down as something of a "pipes" expert. I seem to remember you ahving quite strong opinions about Samsons!

Any thoughts on the Yaffe X-Pipes?

I really like the look of the black coated ones!

Any time your considering a "Looks" pipe your not going to get as good of performance as a performance oriented pipe. I'm not saying they are a bad performing pipe, but you have to weigh looks against performance. I know the crack pipes for instance will support up to 100 hp, but how much of a loss in performance over a stepped header, or a power chamber pipe I couldn't tell you. These pipes rarley end up on dyno shootouts etc, because they are primarily for looks, and not designed to be the best performance pipe. If it floats your boat, then thats the pipe to go with.

Welcome aboard, Molan!! Good to see another familiar face.

I'm a bit biased on pipes. Had V&H longshots on my Sporty. Then got the V&H Big Shots on my '02 Deuce when new. After two years with those, went with the Staggereds because of the deeper rumble. Also like the slash-cut ends that I have since turned 90 degrees outward (pre-drilled and threaded already). Haven't seen many bikes yet with that look on those pipes. Good luck....

That was fun!

Have you seen the vid on the Bub site for a set of Rineharts?

Also sound pretty cool?

Molan,

Welcome to Cycle Chat.

I have the V&H big shot staggered on my 03 Deuce. I like the sound but want the power advantage of a 2-1. They are in great shape (no scratches). Take a look in my gallery for pics and PM me if you are interested in a used set.

I have always believed that Rienharts are the best for performance and looks and sound , sound first actually. But I just put a new 2 into 1 Porker pipe onto mine and took a risk and I can personally tell you it is the best move I have ever done. The sound is incredible and performance is great. I was not so happy after I got my paint job so I was a bit bummed about the bike but since I put the pipe on I absolutely love my bike again.
