I have been tinkering with the exhaust on my 06 street bob to get some more noise. I removed the mufflers for a bit just to see how it would sound, and it is great except for the crackling and backfiring during decel, plus i'm afraid to mess up the engine. i want to try the poor man's trick with a thumbscrew to create adjustable backpressure, but what else do i need to do? do i need a re-map? (it has efi, and an O2 sensor.) i didnt ride it long w/o the mufflers because i dont want to mess anything up, am i just being too cheap or is there any practical way for me to make these pipes roar?

Yep, you're being too cheap ;) You need to either:
a. Get some new pipes that sound the way you like that have an O2 sensor in them.
b. Get some pipes that sound the way you like that do not have a sensor and install a management module like the PCIII USB that can adjust your EFI to compensate.
c. A combination of pipes, A/C and management system.
With a management system you can re-map yourself (within reason), without, you are talking major bucks for Dyno time and a custom map of your onboard EFI will cost more than any pipe you care to buy.
Just my $0.02, YMMV.
