View Full Version : Deceleration popping
OK, I know we've been through this before but here's the scenario........
I recently replaced my V&H Bigshots standard with V&H Bigshots Staggered after 14,000 miles. Never had any engine problems, pipes were good performers but they did snap, crackle, pop,and gurgle on deceleration---didn't bother me as did other owners of same pipes. Now that I have the Staggereds, they are also good performers, especially acelerating between 2.5K and 4K RPM. However, I do have a lot of popping on deceleration. Anything to be concered about? I'm using the same Stage I mapping that dealer used on original Big Shots. Does it sound like I'm a good candidate for the Power Commander? As stated in other threads, these factory mappings are most likely too lean. If I can get even better performance throughout the range with the PC, that's a plus also. Thanks for feedback.
Boom
Boom,
Without a doubt, the power commander is a must.
Besides, who wants to go to the Dealer to remap every time you do any performance mods.
If you are not 100% sure, shout at Dyna Jim, he'll give you th 411.
Good Luck!
Boom, the Power Commander and a good Dyno tune will work wonders. The maps that the dealers install are all the same. It's no wonder why most of them pop real bad. When the bike is Dyno tuned, the map is made for that bike and the exact mods it has.
Thanks guys. I kinda had that idea. I just pulled my plugs to give a good look. They looked very clean. As a matter of fact, I've never seen such clean plugs before! Any (c)leaner and the electrodes would probably be white. There's a little black on the base ring of the plugs but that's it! Now I see what everyone talks about as to factory EPA settings. Looks like PCIII from Dyna Jim is on my wish list.
Somebody refresh my memory.......
seems to me, thinking back to my hot rod days, isn't the plug ceramic supposed to be a little pink when running a good fuel/air mixture?

Boom,
Here's a link that explains jetting and what plugs should look like better.

Thanks for the valuable info Jim! I have just placed my order for a PCIII.

Boom,
I'm not sure what other mods you have, but there is a map on the powercommander site for V&H big shots staggered, SE air intake and Stage I download.
If that is all the mods you have, this map should fix you up. I would try this first and see if you were staisfied. Then if you want to squeeze every little bit of performance out of your bike, take it to a local shop and have it dyno tuned.
If you have any question on the PCIII post them in the EFI section and I'm sure you'll get plenty of help :angel2: BTW, you could go ahead and download the software from their website and play with it while you're waiting for the PC. That way you'll be ready to roll once it arrives. Once you get the PCIII, the install is a 30 minute job so you'll be ready to ride in no time. :gasthrowe
Good luck,
Thanks Maalox, you've been reading my mind. I've got the downloads, laptop, and ready to put it together! At this time, I've just got the basic Stage I and V&H Staggereds. When I get the PC III, I'll be ready to load 'er up and see how she rides! It's great to have access to all this valuable information from you guys! :worship:
Jim,
Just read your info on Proper Jetting & Spark Plugs. Very informative. I learn so much just by being a part of this forum.
Thanks everyone.
The Power Commanderseems like a heck of a good idea, plus all of the map choices available makes things a lot easier. I checked out the manufacturers site and was very impressed.
Good thread.
Thanks for the introduction to the Power Commander.
