View Full Version : Gauging interest...
As many of you know, I'm a kneedragger. In addition to racing with CCS this summer, I have also accepted a position with www.sportbiketracktime.com as a riding instructor in their Midwest region. During the course of a recent conversation, I was asked if folks who rode cruisers would be interested in riding their bikes at a 'non-sportbike-only' track day. This would be a structured event, complete with instruction/drills/coaching on skills that could also be applied to "real world" situations.
I am really interested in your feedback... tell me what you think!
I am a racer by no means, but I would love to take my bike around a track. A closed track, or at least with few other riders close by. I would like a couple of laps, to get to know the track. I think it would be great kicks.

Your not suggesting going fast in a circle on a Harley are you? :nut:
I need a bigger front tire first.... :whip:

This is something I would be interested in. I did a few of these with my Z06 corvette and now that I am riding Harleys I would like to hit the track. There is a track in Granbury TX which has track days for sportbikes, but I don't think they have non-sportbike days.
I would think it needs to be a cruiser only event as mixing rockets and cruisers might be asking for trouble. The difference in speed and handling characteristics might make for some uneasy passing situations.
I have never raced a motorcycle so I would love some instruction on high speed handling...
LOL - not in a circle, but on a road course... such as Road America (well, most likely a smaller venue), Gingerman Raceway, Barber Motorsports Park... In a small group, with safety workers and instructors.
I'd be interested. I've done it before, as part of Keith Codes Cornering School. That was a few years ago though, when I still had my Buell Tbolt.
Keep me posted. If it's Road America or Blackhawk Farms, I'm likely in. :)
I'm also looking at doing dirt track school this summer (www.americansupercamp.com)
Mmmmmm American SuperCamp... :thumb:  My one and only "resolution" for 2004 is to attend that school!
As for STT, I wish I could convince Monte and Bonnie to bring their program to Blackhawk, but that's another story.
I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the positive feedback... will be sure to keep you all posted if something does come together from this!
And in case anybody is interested... STT (www.sportbiketracktime.com) does have Aprilias available for rental at their track days... (I just had to mention) :bounce1:
A couple of years ago Mid-Ohio had this thing as part of their Vintage Days where for a minimal fee you could drive your bike around the track. A few years back I had a "vintage" bike. I don't know if they let all bikes go. I'll check into it.
AMA has a similar deal at Road America during the superbike races... as a member, you can purchase a special ticket that will allow you to participate in a group ride around the track during the lunch break. I think they only requirement they had was that people wore helmets. Pretty much a series of 'parade laps' with all sorts of folks on the full spectrum of bikes... quite fun to watch!
