Bought a 2000 sporty 883 this summer, it has drag pipes and scream'n eagle cleaner. Started getting backfire thru carb at low rpm, so I riched up the mix screw which still had the plug in, then opened the carb up to see if it had beed jetted. It had beed jetted with a 45 slow jet and 170 main jet. I installed torque cones. And the lean backfire got better.... not gone but better. Had a problem with really bad throttle responce at hi-way speed. So took carb off again and found holes in the accelarator pump diaphram. Fixed diaphram........no change. Installed a 175 main jet......no change. Installed a 185main jet ......no change.Took carb off after that and i can hear a rattle in the float bowl! Sounds like its a little piece of metal rattling around under the accelerator pump nozzel. Had never noticed that the 5 times i had the carb off before, and the few Harley guys i know say that ain't right. I've ordered a whole new carb and it's "in the mail" . HAS ANY ONE EVER HEARD OF SOMETHIN LIKE THIS? Could the acc. pump nozzel have broken at the bottom? What the HELL. Could all this be a more serious problem? Or is a broken float bowl a "urban ledgend"?

You have more petience than I do. Taking the carb off that many times I would have probably just replaced the carb and if the problem was still there I would have sold the bike and started over with another bike. When you buy something it can try your patience but I would have like I said unloaded it before I got attached to it. Let us know how it turns out and what the problem ended up being.

Just thought I would chime in here. If you change your high speed jet , you really should change your slow jet also. Too much gap between the two will result in poor performance.

:whs: You can keep your main jet stock, Go up one or two sizes higher
on your slow jet, your rpm's may flutter a little at stops. you really only
use your main at 3/4 or more throttle. Good Luck

Thanx for the input all you guys. My replacement carb came in today so I'll be putting that sucka on in about 12 hours. But it didn't come with a enricher cable, I'll need to switch the one from the carb thats on my sporty. But Ive never disassembled one before, are there any tips or suprises i should be aware of or is it as simple as it looks (unscrew, remove the enricher valve and spring and reattatch to new carb body?)
Thanx for the jet tip shov73 had not been told that before.
