You guys know anything about ceramic coating your pipes so they won't blue ? I am assuming this process is done to new pipes only.

Had mine done and they look great. Spreads out the heat and allows the bike to run a bit better. No the pipes do not have to be new. I had my old drag pipes done. I don't have any pics of it in my gallery with the ceramic coating done but I will try to put some in tommorrow. A good friend took mine to a guy he knows that does a lot of work for the Nascar racers. They ceramic coat everything right down to the rocker arms inside the motor. My friend and the guy he goes to are gonna ceramic coat a motorcycle engine as they would a Nascar engine and see how it preformes. The pipes need to be stripped for it to take. I am not sure if they used an acid or sandblasted mine but I had black high temp paint on them when they went to get coated. And they can coat them in different colors. They even have one that looks like chrome.

I am looking to keep the chrome finish. I have been on;line looking at jet hot. They coat the inside of the pipes. I am still reading the web page and exploring options. Thanks for your input.

sounds cool, don't think we will get that over here though. Will have to buy pipes with it already done.

I hear it reduces the heat of the pipes dramatically and that is always a good thing for performance also.

Well ... Jet hot can recoat the out side with there chrome finish but it looks more like a satin finish. $200. They can coat inside of pipe but cannot guarantee the pipes not to blue. They say they have not got that technology down yet.........The search goes on!

99,

Do your present pipes have heat shields? Looks from your pics you have Samsons, and they offer heat shields. Save the time and cash and buy heat shields. JMHO.

heat shields are $289 dollars
Pipes were $349 Thought maybe coating would be cheaper than heat shields

For what you're looking for heat shields is the way to go. I've seen the satin finish up close, and while I think it looks cool it's not even close to chrome.

To do a pipe would require a flame coating process. Depending on the base metal, type, thickness, it tends to be brittle. In the long run, $289 for heat shields is cheap. A few weeks back I was talking to Sam of East Coast choppers at the show in Wildwood, NJ. He had a bike with the ceramic coated pipes. They looked good with a semi glossy finish. Google him, he can tell you where he gets his pipes done. He told me and I forgot, duh.

Jet-Hot did mine, highly recommend them.

Mine are coated inside and out in a flat black I can't remember what they call their chrome look. It cost me $130 but I probably got a discount as I know a guy who knows a guy...lol Was going to take a pic but the battery is dead in the camera...go figure...lol

Performance Coatings; give them a call.

I emailed Brad at performance coatings last night. He says he can do it with a little risk of discoloring the ends from sand blasting. I call john Anderson a customer of his and got very good reference. So it looks like they are going there when I receive them . Thanks guys

Performance coatings. $80.00 They coat the inside with a ceramic coating and leave your chrome finish on the out side.

$80 is not a bad deal.

I had my race car Ceramic Coated on the headers both inside and out, it redused the engine bay temp conciderably, but also increased the flow rate.

Exactly what it would do for performance on an HD I am not sure, but I am getting a friends Glide headers done as the heat is killing his wife.

Another nice thing about ceramic coating is that the headers hold the heat
in better (much like wrapping them with that insulation stuff). Higher temp
in the pipe improves gas flow by preventing the gasses from cooling down.

Thats why the under hood temps were reduced on that car example above.

Speaking of ceramic coating. Has anyone tried getting the tops of the pistons
coated?

Many years ago, people were doing this with V-8 race engines to prevent
heat from being absorbed by the piston. (this makes more power because the
heat that would otherwize be absorbed, is used to increase cylinder pressure)

I'm wondering if this practice is still in use, and if so, where do we get it
done?

I know that they do coat them and the piston skirts are coated with teflon.

If you're gonna do this...Might as well get the piston skirts hemmed too ROFLMAO!

Yep still in use. Nascar does it as they coat just about everything in the motor. The guy that did my pipes does a lot of Nascar work.

I had the inside of my custom pipes on the Roadstar and never had a problem with bluing. If anything looked suspect, i would clean it up with a little Mothers.
The pipes were Mortons Uproars and paid an extra 40 bucks for the coating. I was quite satisfied. You can see the pipes on ol flame in My Gallery.
