View Full Version : Drag pipes on an injected bike

I am thinking about putting a set of 1 3/4" Santee drag pipes on the 08 Night Train. They are made for this bike and have the O2 sensor bungs in place. I have already had the Harley download done when I put the V&H Shortshots on. I have the stock a/c and don't plan on changing it. I'm not doing this for power or speed but rather for sound. I want this thing louder than hell, kinda like my Sporty. I built the exhaust for that. Has anyone put drag pipes on an injected bike? If so, have you had any rideability problems? Do you think a tuner would be necessary and can you even get a map for true drag pipes? Any input is appreciated.

It seems the concensous here on the site is that you only need to re-map if you increase the air flow with a bigger AC. The pipes only come into play once you've let the engine breath a little. I'd check with the pipe manufacturer.
Take a look around on other threads, this subject has come up a couple of times recently. Try using the search function.

Did the search thing. The question was never really answered in any of the posts that came up. Lots of responses about power loss in the low end though.

Shock, I like the way you think :D
I have the 1 3/4 santee's awsome pipe hardly blued.
Cant help you on the injection part I'm carb. But if you
get it set up and tuned right you wont have alot of
low and mid problems. When you do get them on tho check your
plugs every other day or something till you get it just right.
I heard somewhere on here that with the newer twin cams you
dont really need to use torque cones, plus they will change the sound
a little. I had them in for about 100 miles then took them back out.
Good Luck :thumb:

My boss has a 08 fat boy and he changed the pipes on his bike, he hasn't had any issues that I know of. If you had the download done, then you should be ready to ride. My only question is, Your putting drag pipes on, in place of short shots? I don't think that it is going to make your bike louder, If anything it's going to tone it down. My bike runs drags and one of the other guys at work has the short shots and I can barely hear mine over his. I very well could be wrong. I'm not saying it won't sound good, but I think your going to get a higher tone sound then you would out of them shorty's. Shorter and a larger diameter pipes will give you that deep, loud, bark out of your bike.

Thanks for the info. I'm doing to do an experiment. I still have the stock pipes and I'm going to pull the mufflers off and fab some 2 1/4" straights necked down to the correct size. A little black paint and run them for a few days to see what happens. Total cost...$0.00 just to see.

I just realized that your NT is the 96cu, Maybe a set of 2'' pipes instead
of the 1 3/4 would run better ? I had to go with the 1 3/4 being a 88cu
just a thought. Good luck with your test

I was thinking 1 3/4 for a little back pressure to help out the low end loss you usually get with drag pipes.
