View Full Version : Adding slip-ons
I have a RK Classic EFI and I'm runnig the same stock pipes that came with the bike when it was new. I'm not planning on doing any other mods other than adding different slip-ons to get a better and louder sound. Will this do any harm to the engine? Can my stock pipes be de-baffled?
Thanks in advance for your help

Mark,
There are several ways to modify your existing mufflers with out spending the money on different slip-ons, depending on the type of baffle that is inside the stock muffler. I've had two different sets of baffles on my FLSTC that I've modified. The stock set I was able to increase the flow and sound just by sharpening a piece of re-bar and carefully punching it through the end of the baffle. I had Python 3's on for a while but they were a little too loud for me. So I modified a set of SE II's by removing the baffle and cutting out part of the baffle that blocks the main exhaust passage way then replacing the baffle in te muffler body. Both mods made a difference in the sound. I would remove the mufflers you have and take a look at how they are made, and play with them for a bit. If you don't like the sound or the look. You're not out anything but your time. It won't hurt your engine to do this, although it never hurts to be safe and keep an eye on your plugs for a lean mixture. If you do much more than exhaust mods to an EFI bike you'll need to re-map.

There was a guy on eBay that bored out stock mufflers, a buddy of mine here in Japan got them and is pleased. He wanted to keep his stockers so he could pass the db test, all vehicles in Japan get inspected every two years.
Wish I had the eBayers name, sorry.
Thanks for the help guys!!

If all your after is better sound, the stock pipe mod works well. If you want a better running machine along with better sound, go w/the slip-ons or better yet, true duals. Personally I think the Hooker & Sampson(rolled thunder)sound the best w/o having issues w/bluing. Change your stock breather to a Stage I SE or equivelant. Makes a HUGE difference. If your carb., re-jet along w/thunderslide. If FI, get SE Stage I download @ a minimun. If your want exact map & better sop feel, go with a power commander. Good luck!

You can do slip-ons without having to do a remap.
You can de-baffle your stock pipes, but they will turn tinny and sound like crap. You will be much better off to buy a set of slip ons.
Wild Pigs are the way to go. $145 + $20 shipping and a free T-shirt included -

You can get slash cut, straight cut, or reverse slash cut.........and you can also get larger baffles for more sound.
I have the 1 3/4" baffles and they sound great.........deep rumble at idle and normal accelleration. Great bark when you drop and gear and twist the throttle.

Get the Wild Pigs. For the price you can't beat them. I have the slash cut with the 1 3/4 baffles. They sound really nice. I had the 2" but they were toooooo loud. :gun2:

I swapped in some Rolling Thunder slash cut 1 3/4 Slip-ons a few weeks ago and I really like the sound. Bolted right up very easily and look pretty good too. But the sound is exactly what I was looking for, rumble at idle, normal cruising is easy on the ears and when you get into it, it sounds like it should. Plus, they were only $199 shipped to the door. I know there are better out there, but for the money, these can't be beat....http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v370/conkev/P1010070.jpg

I went with the Wild pigs a couple weeks ago. They sound great. I bought seconds. I can't tell if they have 1 3/4" or 2" baffles. I took the baffles out but I couldn't find any markings on them. The person I got the pipes off of had no idea either.

If your running EFI you will need to get a chip to adjust the fuel to air ratio so you won't run lean. Running a lean mix will blue the pipes, cause pinging, and if it's bad enough - damage a piston.
