I try to start my bike and you can only here the relay cliking . The battery has a full charge and I put a new relay in It, but it still does the same thing!
Anybody out there that can help me? It's a 92 evo with a 113" ultima motor
crane hI-4 single fire ignition and coil with avoes switch.

Check all of your cables for corrosion. Lights work?

It could be the strater solenoid not making contact. If you can feel it energize but not the strater, that could be it.

Good luck

Any updates? Sounds somewhat similar to mine. I have a 94 FLHTC, changed to a 113 ultima, and added new starter. worked fine for a while, but now when I hit starter button, nothing happens, except voltage drops and no sound. It appears to be a dead short. I added a push button on the starter ($50), and it works fine. I have used this for about a year. Now I want to figure out why the button on handlebar is not working.

Friend of mine had the same problem and he had corrosion on his kill switch since he never used it. Then his brother had a similar problem and for him it was his switch. A lot of us have installed the push buttons on the starter since experiencing their starter problems.

have a 1997 fatboy with compufire ignition been working great then i started getting this loud backfire threw exhaust.i put in fresh battery as it was getting weak and also changed the coil, cleaned up the ss e barb looked good.ive done some tests i always get 12 volts on positive side of coil from ignition switch but the neg side coming from the computfire ignition is intermitten sometimes i have it(power and spark) sometimes i dont.it wont start and i get loud backfires threw exhaust if i try to start it.the charging systems seams to work i never have a dead battery and starter seams to work.also when i turn ignition on i dont get a led light on the compufire but i get a red light blinking when i crank it over.i called compufire they said you buy one ignition they last the bike they either work or they dont.said i have something else going on.my wires look good although i changed the connector on -coil as it looked alittle rusted and all my ground connections look good.i took the ingintion out and there didnt appear to be any damage and put it back like it was.did my ignition loose its mind? or died?im clueless can anyone help? thanks man

Try a ignition module from the MOCO. The stock one preferably. If it has no backfire, I would say the module is bad.

Electrically it sounds like a ground corroded or loose. Backfire through the exhaust is often caused by an intake leak.

thanks for the help dafish.i talked to a bike builder in cali says hes changed 1000 computfire ignition their junk.i tested the wire it was good and i noticed a pin hole zit on the module near the metal contacts.so it appears compufire ignitions do not last the life of the bike.grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr he says they all go bad but compufire is junk i now think so too as well as compufires junk tech support.anyways he thought for a evo the best aftermarket ignition was a crane hi 4 so thats what im ordering.

I haven't heard too many bad things about the Cranes. The Dyna 2000 has a bad rap too (not undeserved IMHO).

Glad you found it Bro!

Heh Bros! I've got a similar issue with my starting process except it's on a 110 ci RevTech. I've replaced the starter solenoid as the return spring was welded and broken onto the plunger shaft after I tried to jumpstart the bike during the cold weather with my Jeep running. The original battery was dead but took a charge after that and I'm actually running it in another bike. At first I did fry another new and strong 20Ah battery. Bike acts like it is going to start then just bogs down after almost turning over. The starter is loaded up under tension so it will kick off and spin freely until it resets itself for another try. I check the Stator across the two points to ground and get 0.0 and then directly across the two points I get 0.0. I heard that wasn't good. Could be a shorted stator. I have two single tower single fire coils on the bike and have 12.37vdc at each plus connector. Pulled the plugs out and get spark at each plug and engine will turn over at that point until I put the plugs back in. I've checked and rechecked my wiring. Even added an extra ground from starter to the Neg on battery. Still no luck! It's starting to get really frustrating now. I'm thinking I should pull off the open 3" BDL and all associated parts and get in there and check the stator, making sure everything is lined up correctly, etc. What ya'll think is up with this bike? I appreciate any help you can give!

One more thing. I had thought it could actually be a defective coil caused by my trying to jumpstart it. When a coil is bad it is hard to find the trouble unless it isn't sparking at all. If a bad coil is under a load and it could be going open then it would stop the start process completely. Yes? I do have extra coils I will try them and get back to ya'll.

You got me stumped Lone. I'll think about it and try to get back to you. Meanwhile maybe someone else will have the answer.

Heh DaFish! I've decided that the problem is NOT electrical after doing all the checks on my system. 12.37 Vdc at the battery before cranking and when I do it just drops 3 Vdc under the load. I believe it's mechanical and will pull the 3" open BDL and both primaries off today and see what's causing the extra added compression and faulty start process. Wondering if I'm getting any fuel to the cylinders too cause the fuel is loading up and dumping out the overflow hoses if I try cranking for more than a couple of minutes. Maybe something is wrong with my Mikuni Hsr42 carb. We'll see and I'll keep ya posted later today. Thanks!
