I'm not sure about Under a Rock, but here in Montana as well as many other US States, it's the law that you have to drive with it on.

Not sure if that is the case or not but here is a state by state listing of motorcycle laws http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/laws.asp. If that helps ya. I know its not what you wanted to hear.
Reading through some of them iowa says for vehicle made after 4/1/77 so best i can say is check the state you live in and go from there.

Thanx,
cann't remember which wire came off switch of that new '82 i had, but that 48 pan never need'd 'on' headlight. It seems like that AMF, 1976 E glide of mine didn't stay on without a klick o da switch. Wasn't it prior such & such a year no headlight??? I cann't find Fed code on headlamps, just on headlamp modulators. Wonder, as lids go, is this State specific???

Okay, I took the ball and read on this as it made me really curious. HA, KY, MD, MS and RI are the only states that don't mandate daytime running headlights. The other states either have it mandatory or permit modulating headlights-I guess that means you have to have it on, but the option to make them blink is there. I noticed that different states allow some bikes made after 1973 to bikes after 1980 exempt, meaning one state mandated bikes after 1973 to have them-but not before..etc.
I'm done now....
