View Full Version : What pipes does your bike wear?
Just as a point of reference, what pipes do you have on your bike and what model bike are they on?
Mine are the Python slash cut with crossover on the 02 Deuce.
On the 'Rod... stock exhaust with some one-off custom internal work.
On the 'Barge... non-stock, true dual exhaust (Bub's perhaps? They just showed up on the bike one day)... casually shopping for Thunderheaders at the right price.

I have Supertrapp staggered duals on my '03 FLSTFI. I've always liked the "stockier" look more than the more modern straight pipe look. :gasthrowe

Hooker Tuned Flow® True Dual 2 Into 2 Slash Cut - Sitting in the garage and soon to be on the FLHRSI
Just got finished installing Big Shots Staggered on my '02 Deuce. Sooooooo much nicer install/fit than the original Big Shots. Now I can actually access the mounting bolts -they don't interfere with my swingarm axle nut cover! Definitely love the deeper rumble and can't wait to get the bike out on the highway. Don't know if I will expect any performance difference though.
:bounce:
Still stock on my 03 Softail Standard. Hope to put the SE II's on by spring.

Boom, you probably won't notice a difference in performance but they sure do look better on the Deuce than the Big Shot Long and I'm sure once you're out on the street you'll hear how good they look from everyone that sees them. The Big Shot Long belong on a Fat Boy. :angel3:

Thanks.......once I removed the baffle/packing and put in 18 disks each they sound great. Real nice deep rumble without sounding raspy or being hideously loud. With the disk pack removed they are about the loudest/deepest pipes I have heard.

tslick, I haven't ridden the bike yet with those pipes on. I still need to buy a Power Programmer and install the Ness Big Sucker.

Thought I'd chime in on this one. I'm running Python 3's on my '91 Fatboy. Like the way they look, but they are LOUD!!! Making me lose my hearing - I've taken to stuffing plugs in my ears when I ride. Just ordered V&H Big Shots, staggered, after much research (well, I like V&H and I read a few of these posts.) Think they will look as good, and sound should be great. I'll try to post before and afters.
I still have the stock pipes on my 03 FXSTI but have bought a used pair of SE II's. I need to polish them up before I install. Looking forward to getting them on.

Sorry Bro, I don't have a sound clip of my pipes.
I'm still pretty low tech when it comes to the computers, hell, I don't even have a digital camera yet!
Every time I consider buying one I end up spending the cash on the Fatboy instead... :spank:
That's funny. Good thing I bought my digital cameras before I bought my bikes.
Just bought a set of SE 16 gauge double barrel pipes for my 04 Deuce. Haven't even had a chance to install them yet. Hope they sound as good as I've heard there suppose to sound.
My Deuce came with Screamin Eagle ll Slip On Mufflers but I thought they lacked the deep rumble. They were loud but not deep.

Vance & Hines Turn Down Slip-ons. Stock head pipes.
Vance and Hines Big Radius on my Softail.
Low rumble without the high pitched overtones that a lot of pipes have. I like to describe the sound as Dinosaur Flatulence! (They do have an annoying sound sometimes when engine breaking at lower RPM's.) Fairly loud when putting but not enough to scare most babies. However, when you hit the throttle, they become just as loud as most other loud pipes that have baffles.
I am very happy with them.
I used to run open shorties. Others liked to ride behind me and watch the blue flames shoot out. Those would wake the dead !
Got tired of people calling me when I got home to let me know they heard me stop and park my scoot from there homes 5 miles away. I can now be stealthy when I want to and still shake the birds off the power lines when I go by.
Bub Rinehart True Duals. Love the sound and marked improvement in performance. Not obnoxious at idle or cruising speed, but you get a nice sound when you ramp 'em up.

Okay got a VERY VERY nice Christmas present. Momma traded in the Superglide for the Heritage(sure it has something to do with her comfort)
Does anyone know if I get pipes other than Harley pipes does the extended warranty go to zilch? Or is this a dealer specific thing? I am not liking what I have read on the SE exhausts in the various forums.
Dont want to upset her but the stock pipes make the bike sound very wimpy!! I appreciate the help as I am prioritizing my expenditures so the bike is ready.
holo... any performance pipe upgrade (including Harley's own SE II's) Void's the MFG warrantee. However, most dealers will warrantee the bike and the pipes if you buy them and have them installed at the dealer.
IMHO, any good quality pipe with an appropriate breather kit, properly tuned and or EFI Map will only make you bike breath, and perform better. I have never heard of a pipe upgrade that hurt a bike... Most HD Dealers in my area will install performance pipes and guarantee their work...
I say pick the pipes of your dreams and dont worry about the MOCO Warrantee...
Be sure to let us know what you pic, and show us the pictures after installation! We love new pipe stories!!!

I've got the V&H 2 into 1 Pro pipe hs (full heat shields) on my king. I love it. Great performance, great sound. Quiet enough at idle that my neighbors know I'm 'trying' to be quiet, but loud enough cagers don't like to tailgate, and can't tailgate on thier damn cellphone. Plus getting the heat off my left leg is nice, especially in stop go rally traffic.
Now if I could just mount a good 30mm cannon on her, and do something like this... :gun2:

SEII's don't compare with the V&H Big Shot Staggerds. I had the SEII slip-ons before swapping out. Better sound too. The main reason I changed was because of that high pitched under/over tone the SE II's had. Drove me nuts. I was warned about that by my dealer. Should've listened. :spank:

There is only 1/2 inch clearance between the bung hole and the tranny. also, the 02 sensor should be on the rear pipe since its the rear cylinder that requires more attention. I have SEII's also and instead of taking out the baffles, open them up with acrowbar or piece of pipe. there is a flange that has almost the whole opening closed to force the exhaust thru the baffle. doing this will alow the exhaust to bypass them an exit straight out the pipe. This makes them alot louder, makes the cows in the feilds run with fear!!! :scared:

BUB's Bad Bunghole (Part II). I welded a bolt on the rear pipe, and drilled a hole to accomodate the 02 sensor. The weld was so precise that I did not have to do anything to the heat shield. I also notice another design flaw: the right side header is so close to the swing arm pivot support that if you tighten it without paying attention to the clearance, it'll bust the clamps. All I have to do now is go for a 50 mile ride to let the Terminal Velocity adjust to the new parameter. Still haven't heard from BUB, though. I wonder if they know something they don't want anyone else to know. Or is it my paranoia? more to come...
I still love the sound of the V&H Big Radius pipes. (I had them on my Softail.) I think they have the best sound I've heard so far, but they don't look so good on a Herritage.
My new FLSTCI has the Vance & Hines "Stepped Drag Pipes".
The stepped design offers improved exhaust gas scavenging and the legnth is just right for the TC-88 (over 27" and less than 34" so the back pressure is good).
They sound good and look OK. A couple fellas on this forum (in different , unrelated threads) said they were way too loud and they feared for their hearing! I think they are pleasently loud. But then again, I am used to shooting high power rifles and used to work withn rock bands. Worse than any of that, I am exposed to loud noises in the construction business for years. I will say that I notice a slight ringing in my right ear after riding all day. Just right.....

Fatboy with V&H Longshots mostly no baffles, sometimes 3" cut down baffles. Great sound, decent performance. Used to run Shortshots ran great with baffles, ran like **** without.

06 Fatboy w/ V&H Big Shots Long... unbelievable sound. I've only had them a week and they've set off 3 car alarms as I've ridden past(not *that* loud, just deep and resonant I guess)

I've got Screamin Eagle mufflers on my '04 Road King. With the stock head pipes, they sound good, but I'll probably go to a true dual header system. The slash at the tail is such that it is the same angle as the back edge of the saddle bags.

V&H Big Radius on a 97 Bad Boy...I like them but thinking of switching to black X-Pipes or the V&H X style 2-into1s on the latest Hot Bike magazine cover bike (if the start selling them).

I've always liked the "stockier" look more than the more modern straight pipe look.
This is exactly the concern/desire I had.
Most of my friends considered/installed some type of two-into-one system. The idea was to keep a deep sound, but supply the back-pressure needed for different cams and other engine work.
I don't need the upper end, I just prefer passing torque. At the time of my engine build, I asked about looks-versus-performance. For my needs, it seemed like stock appearing headers and Screaming Eagle mufflers (using the stock scavenger) got me to where I wanted to go.
(I do want a good Harley 'sound,' but I live in a quiet suburban area. And yes, we do have nuts that cruise down the block at 2:00 in the morning with straight pipes.)
As I try different things over time, I wonder if a two-into-one will enhance the power curve where I want it.

Hello again,
I had the Rineharts put on my 05 Road King Classic with the Screaming Eagle Big Bore Kit Stage II what ever this means. Im hoping I did good in trusting the HD shop that told me about them. Any one know if this was a good Mod for my bike. I was told it would make the bike true dual and little more HP. Again its my first bike and have no clue.
Also I have alot of Extra parts from all the mods I have made, i.e fenders, forks, handel bar and every thing that went on the stock handel bar, I guess heads from the big bore change over?, soon rims, and more, one day I will list all the changes I made on my King but what im getting at is there a place on this site to sell?
Thanks again Michael J.

Read it in the sig. Great sound, really sounds like monster breath between the gears if you're nailing it! Burbles nicely on hard decel. But I can still sneak out of my subdivision past two staties without getting frowns. I love 'em.

2004 Heritage Softail Classic with (after much research) D&D Fatcat 2-1. I love the deep sound and great performance. :bounce1:
Noticed you have D&D Fatcat 2into1 on your scoot. Do you have any trouble with them dragging on hard right turns? Has your bike been lowered? I'd consider these pipes on my 2005 Heritag Softail Classic but was concerned about the above since mine has been lowered! If possible, could you e-mail pics of the pipes from as low of a position as possible

I have Supertrapp staggered duals on my '03 FLSTFI. I've always liked the "stockier" look more than the more modern straight pipe look. :gasthrowe
I have just posted a question on supertrapps that you may be able to help me with. Is your bike fitted with a complete Supertrapp system or just the slip fit mufflers?
How loud are they? How quiet will they go down to?

Sorry I missed this post earlier. I don't have any problems with the D&D, but mine is not lowered. I scrape the boards regularly, but I haven't noticed anything with the pipe. I don't really flick the Heritage too hard into turns though. I have a VTR1000 for that.
