I am noticing a slight amount of dark residue (gas/oil) from my exhaust on my wheel. Mainly seems to be when I start the bike. I've never noticed this before.
Is it something to worry about?
I have a 2002 Deuce, fuel injected, with C&H Big Shot Staggered exhaust and a Power Commander.
Thanks, John
John,
Could it be material from the brake pads instead of from the exhaust?

I had that residue at one time on my wheel. Believe it was from the brake. Don't see it anymore once I went with Lyndall Z-pads. I also have '02 Deuce, EFI, V&H staggereds, and PC. No exhaust blow-by on rim.

No - it is definitely from the exhaust. When I start the bike I can put my hand behind the exhaust and I get a bit on my hand.
Or from the final belt drive ...

John...gotta agree with fatboy2 and boom on this one. Unless you're experiencing oil consumption it's probably brake dust. When you said it was primarily when you start up your ride, I assume you've put your hand at the exhaust and revved her a little. Think about this... when the engine cools down everything cools down...the carbon in the exhaust pipes, the combustion chambers and the exhaust ports. When it cools, the carbon, will crack and become loose. Then when you fire her up and rev...it will come out. Kinda like the old chevy that you "blew the cob webs out of". It's just a fine carbon and exhaust residue. Now if you are burning oil via the rings, leaking guides etc.....I'm dead wrong. I assume you have noticed no unusual oil consumption....check your plugs for any sign of oil, if they look good....you're good to go!! :elk: I get the same stuff on the rear, mine appears to be brake dust.
