ok i finally have it narrowed down to 1 of 2 set's of slip-on's...vance&hines or rush.does anyone have an opinion.....well we know the answer to that so let go this route.... has anyone heard a side by side comparison of the two. witch is louder, witch is deeper?? Rush offers different baffle sizes, how do the sizes translate to sound? i have heard a set of old screamin eagle 2's that are supposed to sound EXACTLY like the rush what do ya-all think about that. they were louder than deeper but still had depth, it was pretty cool. but havent heard the vance and hines slip-ons exept on touring modles help

I have a set of V & H straightshot slip-ons on mine. I like them because they are almost the same size as the stock header pipe. They have a nice hot rod sound to them.

that is very kool to know!!!! thanks very much for that input that could be a deciding factor either way

After several attempts asking how baffle size translates to sound, I finally got the answer my own damn self by reading a lot and extrapolating from other comments. Works like this: 1.50" baffle is pretty quiet and 2.50" baffle is pretty f%&#ing loud, with 1.75 being the "medium", and anything 2.00" and over would likely be considered "loud" by most folks wearing blue. Don't know how torque is affected by the different sizes... :cylon:

for one: slip ons are not the way to go unless you are on a budget. Second: sound should be secondary to performance. I for one have always run without baffles but DO realize that having baffles(or cut down) will increase performance. The bottom line is that sound should not be the determining factor(unless that is all you are concerned with) in deciding which pipe to choose...

Sound is irrelevant in relationship to performance.... But I can say, (as an IPSC competitor) Cooper rules...May he rest in peace....................

Well, an 88 c.i. factory Harley with a crossover exhaust isn't the bike to buy if performance is the primary consideration, either, but there's always better performance to be had. Sound is extremely important because it's so intertwined with the Harley V-twin thing we have goin' on. Stock pipes just don't sound like a Harley, so I couldn't abide those things. My only option on this little island at the time were my current slip-ons, but even fuel injection is a trade-off of sorts - you can't run that low of an idle, so my TC88B will never sound like my old Ironhead (or spit flames, but that's probably a good thing).
Personally, I love my Springer and have come to love the differences in the handling, too. I love the crossover exhaust and would never consider a two-into-one because they are UGLY AS HELL to me. (there, I said it.) As for a budget, it's really more about what I can responsibly justify - I'll spend the money for the Stage 1 - it's easy and cheap for the first 12hp, but I'm not going to throw away half of a two year old perfectly good motorcycle engine and head pipes to get another 12hp. Maybe when she starts burning a little oil, I'll look into it... :cylon:

just for the record....for my own personal bike,
1) looks
2) sound
3) performance
for me, my Harley- is fast enough!!
if i was looking for all that much performance a GSXR would be alot cheaper than all that go fast work to a Harley

I heard Rush had deeper tone, V&H can be louder but if you get Rush with 2.25 or 2.50 baffles they would be louder.
I'm getting 1.75" Rush. Don't want to be hated by the neighbours, yet have a nice sound a bit louder than stock but deeper tone.

since you are discussing pipes. let me throw this out there?
new guy on the board and trying to learn as much as possible about pipes/baffles...question> have 06 softail deluxe, wanted something with a stronger/louder sound than stock pipes....ended up with SEII slip ons, had been told they would beef up the sound....not very impressed...dealer suggested trimming the baffles some? has anyone done this? results?
Any feedback suggestion would be appreciated>

Pulled the baffles out of the VH Big Radius 2/2. Cut them in half to baffle some pipes on an Indian. Sold the Big Radius and we put the half baffle back in them. Sounded outstanding.
Took the baffle out of the new VH Big Radius 2/1. Removed fiberglass packing, replaced and still not right. Removed the baffle completely and they are perfect. Quiet on the streets and sheer bedlam when throttle is whacked.
The usual method of removing baffles is a allen head screw in pipe. Remove it and pull the baffle with a pair of needle nose or channel locks. Trim it down and replace or see what it is like without. Don't forget to replace the screw or you will be hunting all afternoon for the baffle.

Good day all, my lowrider has the screaming egles 2's which I love, my wife's 07 sportster has the rush w/ 2" baffles and they are a wee bit louder and sound great... plus the neighbors still talk to us..

Hey G does what size motor does your wifes ride have? You are saying the 2.0 baffles are louder on her bike.
I heard a 07 883 with side shots that might be the loudest bike i ever heard.
was just wondering if the 2.0 baffes were a tic louder than the screamin eagles if they were on the same bike

OK we heard about Vance & Hines and Rush. I am also looking for a Slip-On Muffler for my 2006 Road King Classic. What about Samson or Python Slip-Ons? I've heard samson before and they have a nice low tone to them but I hear they have a bluing problem. I really like the look of the Python Slip-Ons on Road Kings but have never heard them and cannot find input from anybody who has them. How do they sound? And being made by Vance & Hines do they have the same Chrome Chipping off problem?

...vance&hines or rush.does anyone have an opinion..... Rush offers different baffle sizes, how do the sizes translate to sound?
After MUCH research, and most importantly listening, I decided on the Rush 1.75. They're supposed to be neighbor freindly, but bark nice when you gun it. Epiflex (the makers of Rush) says anything more than 2.00 bafles and you'll need re-map (but Fuelmoto maps their Powercommanders for any size), and you shouldn't need 2.00 or higher unless your engine's not stock (cams, etc.)
BUT, now I found out Rush doesn't offer fishtail tips. Even though the SE tips are supposed to fit 'em, the fishtails won't mount (per Epiflex).
That's probably the ONLY reason I'll end up going with V&H.
As far as someone's statement concerning slip-ons vs the whole she-bang with respect to horsepower: If you're not turning your bike into a big ass racing engine the stock headers are close enough for the average guy who'll never have much more than a Stage 1 upgrade.

, but from what I've seen, the price of the baffles is d@mn near the price of the SE's?

Really interested in adding a little more sound to my '08 Heritage which is stock.
I heard a set of Rush pipes at one of the Harley showrooms, but was not experienced enough at the time to notice aesthetics, or pro vs slip on appearance differences. Do the slip ons look professional? The Rush sure
did sound good! I keep hearing the "you will not like slip-ons". Could someone
share with me why I might not be happy with slip-ons, and do you have
to worry about discoloration of your stock headers if you do use slip-ons? Sorry to ask three ?'s on one posting, but,,,, can I change back from time to time to my original pipes if the need should arise? tkx, db

I have V&H slip-ons and they sound great (got 'em from CycleSpot for a great price). As stated in my previous post I wanted the Rush but they don't work with fishtail tips. Now my bike sounds more like a Harley and less like a Honda, plus fishtails look awesome on RKCs IMO! After 5000 miles no discoloration on stock headers or slip-ons (besides the stock headers have chrome covers so you wouldn't see anything anyways), and V&H are the one manufacturer that you don't have to worry about chrome issues. You can easily change back to stock mufflers, but if you're running a fuel management system (I run Dynojet's PC III) you should re-map (since it's programmed for the V&H). But that can be done on your home PC versus having to get it re-dyno'd for mucho dollars.
A soundclip on a PC doesn't do justice, but here's one anyways:

Can't Speak for All but the sound of my V&H is just what i was looking for loud but not extreme unless crack the throttle and the deep cattatacha cattacacha rumble that makes you smile when idling :)

really great on the Road King, and they look every bit as good as they sound!

I am going with the Python Slip-ons on my Road King. They are made by Vance & Hines but I have heard that Vance & Hines Slip-Ons have a tendency to rust quicker and that the chrome chips off.
Since this thread is still open...I'll throw my :2cents: in with a request also;
I run an 883 bored to 1200 with 10.5-1 Compression and the Rush 2-inch slip-ons. I HATE these mufflers! The are too loud and tinny for my tastes. I"ve got the stock mufflers drilled out on my Dyna and LOVE them. Like I said. I HATE the RUSH pipes! Is there a quieter muffler (slip-on) out there that still will let the engine breathe, or do I have to stay with the Rush? The Sporty is a 2007 883R by the way with SE performance stuff. Any help or comments are appreciated.

I have a pair of SE down or back (?) slash slip ons for '07 RK. I took the screws out and pulled the baffles out and removed all the fiberglass inside. Put the baffles back in and they were not to loud and not to quiet - just right. I have since changed the entire exhaust and gone obnoxiously loud (when you get on it) and for performance. I don't know if I can do this on the web site, but I would gladly sell them. They look great and sound great.

Catfish,
You can simply change the baffles out to a 1.5 diameter or a 1.75 diameter to quiet them down.
BTW Hate is a strong word.

I have Rush slip-ons, they are on a 2008 Street Glide, stage I download, SE breather, PC III USB. Thermal dynamics, physics dictate you'll get better performance with 2 into 1, any of them. The bike runs pretty well. The upside with Rush slip-ons is that you can change your baffle orifice by .25" increments for ~ $60.00 a pair. Mine are 1.75", my buddy runs 2.0" with the same type bike. His is a bit louder. Rush claims a 5.0 hp increase. You couldn't give me a pair of HD pipes for anything. Sound doesn't = performance, bp...

Alright!
Thanks to a bunch of folks I did order, receive, and install the Rush 1.75 on
my '08 Heritage. I wanted something a little louder with a more solid Harley
sound than my OE mufflers, but I don't want to offend people with an
annoying sound. Catfish, the 1.75s are loud enough with a good deep tone
and no tinny sound, much better rumble than stock and sound definition.
My bike had sufficient power and surge anyway, but I do believe I feel some
more spirit?
Maybe someone can define 'stage II' for me? sorry but I'm a little bit illiterate
on this biker lingo. I think you're talking about a breather system update?
You know a fuel injection will not cadillac, as they'll not idle, so the injected
models will never give you that old 'thud-a-lug we all love! All in all I am
full throddle with my new Rush 1.75s. I got the slash downs, and they look
a 100 times better than the torpedo shaped muffs from
the factory. (sorry harley) ...... Yo pal, danbil08

I'm in the same boat. Trying to decide between the Rush and Some old SE II's. I have not heard either pipe but I do understand there is a few extra HPs when you swap out the Stock mufflers. I don't want to buy the SE II's and then wish I had the Rush?/ What's a guy to do? jack

I just installed a set of Rush 1.75's on my 08 Ultra. I am extremely happy with the looks and the sound, though I wished I would have ordered them with the 1.5. I really wanted to keep the pipes pretty quiet. These sound about the same to (Volume wise) as the older SE II slippons.
I am hoping the 1.5's baffles will be quieter.
Bike runs perfectly, no backfiring, popping, etc.

Thanks for the feedback on the pipes. I found a set of the SE II's and they are great. Bike runs great and I like the sound. Only really loud when you crank it and so far the old folks in my neigborhood where the average age is 115 haven't complained. Guess they can't very well anyway. Thanks again. By the way my Fat Boy runs like a different bike with the SE II's vs. the stock pipes. Much more torque and power. Just amazing what changing the pipes can do. Jack

I have the Rush with the 2" baffles on my 2006 Fatboy. I also added a K&N RK-3909 Filter Kit and a Power Commander USB III.
My bike runs way better and way cooler now. I have been trying different downloads for the Power Commander and think I might have stubbled on something kinda' cool.
On their site there is no exact download for my options. They told me the closest one was probably Screaming Eagle Slip-ons and the Screaming Eagle air cleaner. It is download #M805-201. It works fine but I was trying to get the slower old style idle.
I tried a bunch of different ones but when I downloaded this one "2006 Harley Davidson Softail Rush slip-ons Screamin Eagle air filter Stock Springer ECM" I swear the idle is slower. M805-221. I really like this one. Try it if it's close to what you have. The performance feel the same as the other to me and absolutely no popping on deceleration
Also, don't forget to try the accelerator pump download they have on the site. You can mess with this one too. It's a blast.

Catfish, I have Python's and I thought the same thing, loud and tinny. They I put in the Quiet baffle from Vance & Hines and they sound much better. But I like the look of true-dual with fishtails... so I ordered those and they should be here by Friday.
Just wanted to Bump this to see if anyone had any suggestions.
