Is backfiring on de-acelleration normal?

I get the normal reversion and popping noise and am ok with it... but on hard de-acell I get some pretty loud backfiring going on?

Ok... true confessions... one day this spring when on a run when the temp was in the hi 30's to low forties... while wearing my Winter HD riding gloves I accidentally hit the on/off switch and shut the bike of at about 40MPH... soooooo.... I imediatly hit the on switch and BANG! it let out a backfire like a cannon... I thought I may have broken some nearby windows???

I know, I know (rookie f@%*ing mistake???) But I have all the right excuses...

Anyways... I was wondering if I F%^&*ed something up? Maybe cracked a pipe/created an exhaust leak or somthing that might cause this consitant backfiring on de-acell...

Thought I'd toss this mystery out to the experts???

Whadayathink???

(About the exhaust of course...?) :theyareon

Not an expert here....and have done the same on the Bang thang ! Evidently it don't take much of a leak to make one start backfiring on decel. In my tinkering with pipes , when first installed and sealed up good they did not pop but over time they would start. Are you running baffles? They should stop the reversion somewhat on decel but you may be on to something about the bang creating an exhaust leak. Mine tends to pop more when I'm coasting down a hill.

P.S. The more you look at the 05 Heritage, the worse will old Mint1 run :nut:

My boss John is an ex navy pilot and has told me a number of stories about the planes that he flew.

Once, when he was almost through training, he was running pre-flight with his instructor sitting behind him. The plane was running at this time and his next step for checking the magnetos. He turned the first one off and noted the result, then, instead of turning the first mag back on and shutting off the second mag, he began to turn of the second mag. Instantly relalizing what he was doing it he tried to turn it back on. Too late. The mag had already lost power.

BOOOOOM!

He said it sounded like the whole front of the plane was just vaporized. Once his teeth stopped vibrating and he could hear again the engine sounded fine but he knew what he had to do. He radioed the tower to take him off their list and he radioed the ground creww that he would be taking the plane to the hangar for inspection. Later his instructor, who sat quietly behind him as if he wasn't there at all, said that John had screwed up royally but he wasn't going to put the incident on his training record as John had done exactally what he was supposed to do with out being told and without asking if that's what he should do.

John's in Dublin right now so I can't ask him what could have possibly happened when the engine in his plane backfired. I'm sure it can't be good to have all of that raw fuel go bang in your exhaust but since this happened way back in the Spring you may have done nothing more detrimental than damage your exhaust gaskets. Sorry, I'm no expert. I just had to relate the story of my boss doing the exact same thing to a MUCH larger engine.

Peace.
O.C.

OC... I thought I had screwed up? Looks like that could happen to the best of us? Whoa... I'm glad that at least I was on the ground?

But, I'm not sure I can part with the MINT1....
